Why Move to Columbus? The Kids Will Never be Bored

Nestled in the heart of Ohio, Columbus is a hidden jewel with something for everyone. Over 2 million people live in and around the capital city of the Buckeye State, home of OSU which is one of the largest colleges in the country. The vibe in Columbus is modern, techy, yet family-oriented, as we are home to a world-class Zoo, science center, and park system.

The Columbus Zoo hosts over 10,000 animals from more than 600 species. My favorites are the manatees and the polar bears. The famous Jack Hanna was a longtime Zoo director and spokesperson, helping it grow into a huge complex that now includes Zoombezi Bay, a 22-acre water park, and Safari Golf Course.

Downtown Columbus boasts the sprawling, 320,000 square foot building of COSI, the Center of Science and Industry. COSI has regular science exhibits on dinosaurs, space, oceans, natural history, gadgets, and more.  Recent short-term exhibitions include those on Jim Henson, Cuba, and DC Superheroes. With an IMAX theater, a planetarium, and a huge playroom for little ones called KidSpace, there is truly something to stretch any brain. My personal favorite is the Meet the Innovators exhibit, which includes a racecar equipped with hand controls for the disabled.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is a magical place with biomes, gardens, and horticultural and art displays galore. With 13 acres to meander in, the visitor will be treated to Dale Chihuly’s incredible glass creations, interspersed with beautiful flowers, koi ponds, and unique plants. The Butterflies and Blooms exhibit is a seasonal favorite, year after year. The Conservatory also hosts classes, summer camps, and workshops on everything from gardening to wellness.  Visit the hot shop for live glass-blowing demonstrations or play in the Scott’s Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden, with excitement around every corner of the natural play area and canopy walk.

Did I mention that Columbus is also a foodie haven? From Graeter’s Ice Cream to J. Gilbert’s Wood-Fired Steaks & Seafood, our town is home to a plethora of perfect cuisine. There is a saying that if you can start a successful restaurant in Columbus, you’ve got it made. The turnover rate of new culinary talent makes for a constantly changing food scene here, with plenty of old standbys to fall back on. Columbus is also the home of Wendy’s, and hats off to Dave Thomas for his Foundation for Adoption. They have helped thousands of foster children in the U.S. and Canada find forever homes.

On top of all this excitement, Columbus Metro Parks boasts 20 parks of natural beauty. With more than 230 miles of trails over seven Central Ohio counties, and 28,400 acres of land, each park is an oasis of peace in an otherwise busy area. Fishing, hiking, and boating are all activities that families can enjoy. Archery, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding are also popular.
